The Scotiabank Convention Centre, in Niagara Falls, is Honoured with a Gold Award for being one of Canada’s Safest Employers by Canadian Occupational Safety magazine
Thursday, October 31, 2013 (Niagara Falls, Canada) --- ‘Success’ is no accident for the team at the Scotiabank Convention Centre, in Niagara Falls (SCCN), who were honoured with a Gold Award for being one of Canada’s Safest Employers for their diligent health and safety procedures within the Hospitality Sector by Canadian Occupational Safety (COS) magazine at their Annual Awards Gala, which took place at the Arcadian Court in Toronto, Ontario on Wednesday, October 30, 2013.
“We are strongly committed to the health and safety of everyone who comes through our doors, including all of our employees,” said Jeff Dixon, Interim General Manager, Scotiabank Convention Centre. “Since even before we opened our doors to the public, our team was hard at work developing procedures, and designing a number of health and safety programs that revolve around education, implementation, and continual improvement.” and added, “To be honoured as one of Canada’s Safest Employers is a testament to our team’s dedication to success.”
“Our team takes great pride in this incredible recognition,” said Tammy Sweeney, Director of Human Resources, Scotiabank Convention Centre. Tammy, along with other SCCN members of the Health and Safety Committee, has played a central role in the training and implementation of the many health and safety procedures and standards at the SCCN. The Centre’s Health & Safety Committee meets regularly to discuss and tackle issues that affect the wellbeing of staff and the hundreds of thousands of guests & visitors who annually come to the convention centre. It is through their tireless efforts that the Scotiabank Convention Centre has managed to maintain such a stellar health and safety record.
“Canada’s Safest Employers Awards recognizes companies from across Canada that are raising the bar in occupational health and safety,” said Amanda Silliker, Editor, Canadian Occupational Safety (COS), and added, “The winning companies represent a wide range of sectors from retail to mining and have exemplary programs in place to keep their workers safe. In addition to the Hospitality Sector, a panel of judges from the workplace safety industry also recognized the achievements and efforts of companies and organizations from: Building & Construction; Manufacturing; Retail/Services; Transportation; Utilities/Electrical; Health Care; Oil & Gas; Mining & Natural Resources; Public Sector/Non-Profit; and Wellness. A few of the companies and organizations that received Gold and Silver Awards included: Air Canada; Powerstream; Fairmont Royal York; Capital Care; Vancouver Airport Authority; and Nestle Waters Canada. The evening event was emceed by Heather Hiscox, Host of CBC News: Morning, and featured keynote speaker: Steve Mahoney, President, Radiation Safety Institute of Canada and former Chair of Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board; and guest speakers: Hon. Kellie Leitch M.P., Minister of Labour, and Minister of Status of Women; and Maureen Shaw, Advisor, B.C. Health and Safety Leadership Charter Member, Mental Health Commission of Canada Workforce Advisory Committee.
